Stella has spent ten years as the sole keeper of Way Station 417, a derelict outpost so remote that her last visitor came four years ago and didn’t even get out of his ship. Her parents vanished into the stars when she was sixteen, and the bureaucracy that was supposed to care for her handed her a laminated manual instead. She’s learned to live with the silence, the ration pouches, the same diagnostic sweep every morning. She’s learned to stop expecting anything at all.

Then a man in a cowboy hat walks out of the men’s bathroom, asking about a food court that doesn’t exist. He shouldn’t be here. Not in this corridor, not on this station, not in this universe. And the longer he stays, the more everything Stella has built around her solitude begins to crack open.
