❓ Is it wrong to assume intelligence?

A lot of the marketing “wisdom” out there assumes that one’s target audience is stupid. In fact, some marketers will explicitly recommend: assume that people are dumb. They might not use this exact wording (“people are dumb”) but they are saying basically the same thing, implying that the world is full of stupid people.

That might very well be the case. The world might, indeed, mostly consist of stupid people. And perhaps if I were selling a no-brainer product, I might follow the marketing advice targeted at the marketers who sell to no-brain people.

But given that I’m creating long-form text (which, according to the dispensers of such marketing advice, “nobody consumes anymore”)… I kinda… I don’t think I should take that route…? I think I should actually do exactly the opposite, as in: assume people are intelligent. At least, I will assume that my people are intelligent. I don’t think I’ll be able to live with myself if I live with the assumption that people who read my books are stupid. I feel much better assuming that my people are intelligent, abundant, and attractive. 🤷‍♀️ Why wouldn’t they be?!
