Printing prices continue to go up, so it has become trickier to release paper versions of shorter works. I prefer to release each story individually, regardless of length, but there comes a point where it’s nonsensical or impossible to do so, when it comes to paper versions. For example, with my current setup, a hardback will not be possible for a novella.
That said, a paperback would still be possible. It’ll be a thin paperback (or a tiny paperback; maybe also thin and tiny), but then there are many thin paperbacks. Many plays, for example, come in those tiny booklet-type paperbacks. They look quite nice, when they sit together on a shelf. And a work like Of Mice and Men is a novella; I guess it could be sold as part of a collection, but I’ve only ever seen it being sold on its own.
Just, in general, I really don’t like things jumbled up together purely because of structural challenges. If a story is a story and not another story, surely there is a reason for it. It is a story on its own, that’s why it gets its own cover, it gets its own title, its own protagonists, and so on. Then I want the ability to buy it on its own.
