The fear of being “too supernatural” is there. It’s strange, because all I need to do is label the story as “supernatural.” Most people are intelligent enough not to read stories with supernatural elements, if they don’t want to, when it says “supernatural” right there.
But I guess this has more to do with my personal preference. If there seems to be supernatural stuff for the sake of supernatural-ness, I feel like it’s unnatural. The supernatural feels unnatural, when it’s supposed to feel natural!
It sort of doesn’t make sense, but sort of does. It’s like how the most “unreal” description of love can be the realest one. (Isn’t it more real to describe love as a thunderstorm than to describe it as a neurochemical reaction?)
Actually, I’m gonna have a character say something to this effect. Fantasy is the realest thing. Fiction is reality, etc, etc.
I want the courage to go all-in.
